'Poets at the Night Cafe'

Very large impressionist French street scene/cafe composition. People doing ordinary things fascinate me but inevitably I seem to like shifting things around in my paintings or building from a basic idea. A composition such as this, where I have stolen the Poet, Pablo Neruda or an actor representing him and his postman friend from a favourite movie of mine.. 'Il Postino', a great movie if you haven't seen it.. hardly anyone dies even!.. just about love and relationships. think that I may have been born in the wrong era, someone once suggested, or maybe the wrong planet! I love the huge amount of time it takes to put a work like this together.. heck.. I think I even like it when something goes wrong and I am hit with a sudden revelation that something in the painting is just so wrong that I have to completely re-do that part of it. Maybe I shouldn't admit to doing things like this. Maybe I shouldn't admit that I am still working on this painting in some form or other, subtle at times, alterations. While I am at it I should admit that Pablo and his postman friend appear in this work twice and that indeed I have placed myself in it! My favourite part is where Pablo is lecturing his friend, or is it critiquing his latest offering of a love poem to his girlfriend.. don't think it is going to well for the postman though, as he sinks into his seat.
Maybe the effort in this work and it's frustrations with mistakes made and repaired on such a difficult surface reflect some masochistic part in my personality. Please buy it and take it away from me.. although you will also take a bit of my heart with it.. God, sounds messy!

This small mountain on the Northern Wairoa River in the North Island of New Zealand is a favourite subject of mine. A mystical kind of view, with the new moon rising and conversing with Toka Toka. Legend has it that there is a 'Tanewha' or water monster lurking in a cave under the mountain.
Had a beer at the brilliant little pub snuggled between the mountain and the road recently.. took some more photos and did a sketch.. feel ANOTHER Toka Toka painting coming on!
