About This Print
Painted to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake, Van Gogh's blossoming almond tree celebrates life through and the rebirth of nature. Inspired by Japanese artist Hiroshige, the painting, which simply shows a set of blossoming branches set against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, represents a bold and novel composition. Hanging above his nephew's bed the image had the effect that Vincent hoped, with letters claiming that the child was particularly enthralled by the work. Considered amongst the artist's most important works, it shows an artist experimenting with a new style and a wonderful expression of hope and new beginnings.
