About This Print
In anticipation of the arrival of friend and artist Paul Gauguin to stay at his home in Arles, Van Gogh painted a series of sunflowers, designed to hang in the guestroom. Completing four initial versions the artist was only pleased with two of the paintings, later completing three reworks of them. This particular print is a reproduction of one of the initial paintings, and was selected by the artist to hang as part of a triptych for exhibition in Brussels. Van Gogh hoped that when seen as part of a decorative whole the sunflowers would symbolise gratitude. The work now forms part of Neue Pinakothek's collection in Munich.
