I am ROBERT FINLAY CAMPION of Scottish and French descent. Born In Auckland New Zealand. I completed my Art qualifications at The Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in the late 1980's, specializing in FIGURATIVE works which includes a passion for recreating the style and techniques of the Dutch Master JOHANNES VERMEER which entails warm sunlit interiors. Since then I have been self-employed as an artist and teacher specializing in commissions in OILS from portraits to landscape. My style is realism. My fundamental belief is to achieve the correct lighting in which a certain mood is conveyed and without it the painting cannot succeed. |
Example of the "VERMEER" style of an interior with a figure placed in a situation of working or in recreation. The critical aspect is the lighting which is nearly always from a window positioned on the side of the work. The foundation of the painting is built up in a series of grey tones known as GRISAILLE. Colour GLAZES are then built up in succession over time to create a rich depth. NFS |

This painting invokes the memories I have of tramping through the native forest of New Zealand and the beautiful crystal clear water roaring over the mossy rocks. It tells the story of sun rise after morning rain which is purifying and cleansing. I wanted to convey the freshness of the cool morning and beginning of a new day. The Rotorua Lakes of New Zealand offer a tranquil beauty which is notable in the early morning or late afternoon. The interplay between light and shadow was something I wanted to capture on a large scale with full saturated colour. For me this particular lake is deeply spiritual which you can feel upon arrival at this place. I have long been fascinated by the concept of the forest guardians in the form of spirits or fairies. It reveals the idea of a Maori maiden clothed by nature, serenely watching over her domain. |
